Konopiště Château

The château of Konopiště was originally a fortress, built with due regard to French defensive construction. Over time the brusquely functional building turned into a charming château, used among others by the Sternberg and Lobkowicz nobility, as well as briefly by the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand d’Este.

The instigator of the medieval fortress around the year 1294 was Prague Bishop Tobiáš of Benešov. The major and long-lasting owners were the Sternbergs – this being their seat from 1327 for the next 275 years. During the 17th to 19th century the place changed hands among several owners and noble families. The first significant change to the original structure was made at the end of the 15th century, and members of the Vrtba Czech noble family turned it into a Baroque mansion in the 18th century.

In 1887 the castle and entire estate was bought from the Lobkowicz family by the Archduke and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand d’Este, who had it rebuilt once again in a more historical style, to house his extensive art collections, and had the surroundings landscaped as a romantic park. In 1921, the Czechoslovak State took over from the Archduke’s estate, and the Konopiště château and park were partly opened to the public. A sadder and more troubled phase in the history of Konopiště came during World War II, when it became a Nazi SS headquarters. After the liberation, the castle premises were once again opened to the public.

Of interest

One of the local attractions is undoubtedly the bear-arium. Bear-keeping goes back a long way here – the first furry fellows were brought here in the middle of the 19th century by the Lobkowicz family, and Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este continued the tradition. The current bears are the Asian black bear species, classed as vulnerable.
