Following Casanova’s Steps to Mnichovo Hradiště

Not many people have an idea that the most famous lover in the world Giacomo Casanova spent his last days in Bohemia. He left his steps also in Český ráj (the Bohemian Paradise) at the Mnichovo Hradiště Chateau, when the library from the Duchcov Chateau was brought here at the beginning of the 20th century. Casanova worked as a librarian in this library at the end of the 18th century.

Duchcov Chateau and Mnichovo Hradiště Chateau belonged to the Wallensteins, and it was them who provided ageing Casanova, who wrote his famous memoirs at that time, an employment as a librarian in the duke’s service. Therefore, during the tour through the interiors of the Mnichovo Hradiště Chateau, you may see books that Casanova himself touched.

Recent appereance of the Mnichovo Hradiště Chateau’s interiors, even after all the later adjustments, resemble the mood of the 18th century. Historical furniture together with many large oil paintings on the walls of the drawing rooms and other antique decoration form a very impressive complex. In the corridors and on the stairs you may  find Wallenstein family portraits and hunting trophies.
